Rachel’s Story
I was brought up in a Christian home and at an early age trusted the Lord. Only when I began to attend the young peoples group a few years later did I really begin to understand the meaning of what it meant to be and live as a Christian and did I start putting into practice some of the practical things I knew I ought to do as a believer.
After 'A' levels I trained as a nurse in Nottingham, then worked in Cambridge for 9 months (dermatology) before returning to Leeds my home town where I continued working in a surgical post until shortly after being married and going to Belfast Bible college ('93 -'94).
Before leaving for Peru, our daughter Amy was born in May '95 and then we arrived in Peru in July '96. I spent the first year or there about in full time language study and I'm very grateful to the excellent language school in Arequipa where I learnt Spanish. My ministry since then has mainly been in helping Steve in the production of materials for children's workers, and in the production of the holiday Bible club material. I wrote most of the stories in a way that those who felt unable to tell a story could just read them if necessary. As many folk come to the house to chat and to borrow materials, hospitality plays an important part in my role. I am very grateful to a lady called Antonia who works for us like a home help, cooking, cleaning, ironing etc, which leaves me more time to be involved in our ministry to which the Lord has called us.
Apart from being mum to three children, I am bookkeeper for SIM Peru. This has been a challenge for me but a way in which I have been able to serve the whole mission in Peru.
