What is a Missionary?
Maybe you remember what Jesus told his disciples just before he went back to heaven? He said:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV).
So, a missionary is someone who tells people the good news about Jesus and teaches what he taught as found in the Bible. Jesus told his followers to go into all the world. Do you remember another of the things Jesus said before he went back to heaven? He said:
“... You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8b NIV).
To the disciples, Jerusalem was where they were right then. If we are Christians, we are to be missionaries where we are right now. This may be where we usually live or by going to another place especially to tell people about Jesus. We happen to be working in Peru. If you are a Christian, you can be a missionary right where you are. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are!
