Cacti - Pictures of the Greenhouse

In our second term the greenhouse was on the roof of our house. Looking in to the left standing in the doorway. Looking straight in standing in the doorway. Looking in to the right standing in the doorway.

Pots or trays standing in plastic trays on the shelves. The wires are to
stop them falling off in an earthquake like they did last time!! It got quite hot near the top as the greenhouse has no roof vents. Larger seedlings are potted on into individual round clay pots. Smaller seedlings stayed in trays.

These are less than two years from seed. Once I got round to transplanting the overcrowded trays of seedlings,
the growth was amazing! I wish I had had time to do it sooner! I'm sure the plants appreciated it though!

The variety of flower colour from a packet of Mammillaria bocasana
var. roseiflora was remarkable. These flowered in their second year from seed. Some were very pale pink. Some of the other succulents flowered while still in their original tray.

This pink flower was tiny. Here you can see some of the variation in the plants grown from one
packet of seed. This is the Mammillaria Hahniana and another Mammillaria species.

Before we returned to England at the end of our second term we had
to dismantle and move the whole greenhouse. Although it was
designed to be moveable, it was still a real hassle!! We wrapped the steel frame in white cotton strips to stop the heat
conducted from the black painted metal burning the plastic cover
so quickly. The wooden staging fits over the metal frame. This allows the whole
structure to move in the wind! Once the shadecloth cover was in place, thick horticultural plastic
sheet was taped over the top to provide insulation and protection
from rain. Before I added the plastic the temperature did not rise
enough for optimum growth. The shadecloth is necessary
because of the fierce sun.
