Cacti - Pictures of Seedlings

These seedlings are from seed planted in 2000. They were bought from MESA Garden in New Mexico. The soil mix I used consisted of:
4 parts sand
4 parts finely sifted peat
1 part garden soil
1 part composted garden waste.
5% charcoal was added to the above. This mixture was microwaved and put in plastic trays with holes burned in the
bottom with a hot nail.

The top layer was finely sifted with the coarse remains placed in the bottom of
the next tray. The trays were stood in larger trays of filtered water and left to soak. A transparent tray was placed upside down over this and the whole lot put in a
propagator. The temperature was thermostatically controlled and heat provided by a soil
warming cable hung in the air around the edge.

As the seedlings germinated, the trays were moved to admit air and gradually
removed completely. Germination of the seed was generally good. Progress was hindered by lack of time to transplant when necessary! In trays of packets of mixed cactus and other succulent seed the faster growing
other succulents rapidly swamped the slower growing cacti.
